As with so many Sherborne properties, the public face of the building can hide a story of development, often over several centuries, and this is especially true of the houses grouped around the green space at the heart of Newland. Created in 1227–28 by the Bishop of Salisbury, this ‘Newlonde’ developed apart from the remainder of Sherborne and to this day retains a feeling of individuality.
This house history is based on an architectural survey of the building linked to the stories of the known occupants, and sets out to explain the influence of one upon the other to create the property as it stands today. As well as several appendices providing detail and background to the events described in the text, there is a description and analysis of an eighteenth-century wall painting that has survived largely unscathed through the years.
