This is an account of a preliminary examination of the roof structure of the SS. John Almshouse in Sherborne. Not an examination of the whole structure, which was considerably enlarged in 1866, but of the original building, erected in the 1440s when Henry VI was on the throne. This is a well-documented building, but one which still has something to be revealed through an examination of the roof structure – not a thorough survey, so classed as ‘preliminary’, but nevertheless with some interesting conclusions.
